Public schooling in D.C. is provided by District of Columbia Public Schools. The district operates 170 campuses and serves more than 65,000 students. Despite the size of the organization, the district’s student-to-teacher ratio is relatively low at 13.3 (as last measured). In addition, families also have many options for private schooling, from pre-kindergarten through high school.
D.C. is also a hub for college institutions. Local public and private universities give post-high-school students many choices for all levels and types of coursework. George Washington University, Georgetown University and Howard University are the largest local private schools in terms of enrollment. The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) is part of the public school system; UDC’s full-time enrollment is about 3,200.
Small commercial districts in Cluster 15 offer neighborhood dining plus a variety of products and services for the convenience of residents. Connecticut Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue are primary commercial/retail/entertainment corridors. A large concentration of international restaurants, numbering more than 20, is located on the 2600 block of Connecticut.
One of the primary advantages of living in Woodley Park, Cleveland Park, Massachusetts Avenue Heights or Woodland-Normanstone Terrace is the proximity of Rock Creek National Park and the National Zoo. The park is a lush and natural oasis in the midst of an urban area. This refreshing open space is used by soccer teams, picnicking families, hikers, bicyclists, inline skaters, tennis players, equestrians and leisure seekers. Families and animal enthusiasts often spend time at the National Zoo, which sprawls across 163 acres within Rock Creek Park. Home to more than 2,400 animals, the National Zoo is a family fun destination as well as a scientific research and education center.
